The Friendship Force Varel Bossel and Kale Event 2008
In marginal weather conditions and accompanied by
guests from Friendship Force Hannover the Friendship Force Varel
started this years’ Bossel and Kale Event in the area between Varel
and Dangast in the afternoon of February 23rd 2008. In the beginning
the bossel contest led into Northerly direction along the Meedenstreet
and then took a short turn to the East on the Groden high road at the
end of which it went to the South and back to the start along the
Golden Line. Although it was a very tough competition there was no
actual winner at the end of the day. However the next highlight – the
kale meal at the “Moorstuben” restaurant – dealt with winners and
kings and queens.
Every year the honour of majesty carried by the “Kale King and his
Kale Queen” changes and this time Queen Hildegard und King Hartmut
were officially announced and enthroned. Thereafter the evening was
enlightened by musical entertainment and humorous literary
presentations.
On the next morning the guests were invited for a visit of the famous
sailors’ yarn conserving “Spijöök“ Museum at Varel, giving them an
“honest” and long lasting impression of the life at the coast line and
at sea.
„Bosseln“ (roadbowling) is considered to be a sports event which is
predominantly performed on small in the northwestern and coastal
regions of the German Republic and in Ireland country roads where two
or more teams are facing each other in the bossel competition. Each
team has one hard rubber ball with a weight of 600 gramms. After the
selection of the names and the sequence of the “throwers”, as the
players are called, and the first thrower starts to roll the ball
along the road for the longest distance possible. The next thrower
starts at the dead point of the previous ball etc… The team that
crosses the target line after 5 or 10 km with the least number of
attempts is the winner.
It just so happens that directly at the target line there is always a
restaurant which serves a traditional kale dinner with smoked pork
loin, various sausages cooked or with gruel (pinkel) and fat bacon and
lots of drinks. After the dinner a Kale King and Kale Queen are being
elected and crowned using mysterious and always changing procedures to
catch them by surprise. Thereafter it is the main task of the
Kale-King and his Queen to organise the Bossel and Kale Dinner event
for the forthcoming year!

Mid time there was provision with coffee, tee and schmaltz and raisin
bread
It tasted just fine!!!
