Tide Mud Hiking 2010 to Spiekeroog Island
On Saturday July 3rd 2010 Helmut Suhren had planned
yearly low tide mud hiking to the island of Spiekeroog. So early
in the morning sunshine the 21 fearless, including some
guests, met on time at the harbour of Harlesiel.
The guide Hans Ortelt gave a short and understandable introduction,
he checked the equipment and put a special emphasis on the sun protection
and water provisions as a summer day with extreme heat temperature
had been forecasted.
Since 2009 the Biosphere
Reservation of the North Sea mud flats has been declared as
a UNESCO Natural Heritage and underlined the international importance
of this natural life resort as well as interdependence of man and
nature.
The 10 km track with the increasing temperature and its natural
features such as mud fields, tideways and two narrow channels that
had to be crossed formed some physical challenge to the hikers.
After four hours they arrived at the island and relaxed taking a
bath at the beach on the so called seaside of Spiekeroog.
It also meant a perfect cool down in preparation of
the Island Viewing of the soccer match between Argentina
and Germany. With the German victory in their mood they
returned to home.
