An ”Indian summer“ as designed

Exchange of Friendship Force Varel to Friendship Force Southern Connecticut (USA) and Friendship Force Niagara (Canada) from October 7th to 21st 2010.

The following day after a rainy arrival in Boston the tinted glass of our bus heading south on Highway 91 through New England were giving us, i. e. 19 ambassadors from our club, protection against the bright sunshine which had decided to accompany us during the whole period of our exchanges.

This enabled us to experience the worldwide known famous leaf coloring in the USA and Canada in a variety and intensity that made even non-photographers to take pictures.

After the hearty welcome on a parking lot at Guilford, Connecticut some of our group got the chance to experience this colorful phenomenon close up and with all their senses as the locations of their hosts’ houses were in the midst of forested areas. The others however did not mind their beautiful direct sight from their room to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and the tips of Long Island.

Friendship Force Southern Connecticut had prepared an interesting and still very relaxed program offering to us selected Information on the history of the state and its citizens and sufficient time with the hosts and their specific ideas and plans.

After the official “Welcome” by the democratic Senator in election stress Ed Meyer, we visited the Indian Pequot Museum which is located in the neighborhood of casino in the middle of their reservation. A hike through the colorful forests, a picnic at the beach and a visit to a local farmers’ thanksgiving market alternated with guided tours along arts shops and historical buildings. The special visit to the Yale University, that had been exclusively arranged for our group and a visit to a festival at a local vineyard were further topics of the harmonic program.

The country club directly located at the Atlantic Ocean and its unforgettable sunset beach formed a symbolic last highlight of the Farewell Dinner.

A bus transfer trip accompanied by unexpected difficulties caused by the bus driver through the state of New York and the land of the leather stocking stories gave us lots of additional impressions of the Indian Summer appearances, however in the final consequence it led to a delay of more than two hours at the arrival at Friendship Force Niagara. This fact did not influence the hearty welcome by our Canadian hosts.

On the other hand we were learning very quickly that this club was having a tight organisation in plans and program adherence, because group photos had been planned after the welcome and they were taken shortly after the welcome. One should not be surprised about this orderly manner taking into consideration the number of exchanges that this club has to manage each year due to its highlight of tourism.

The sun was continuing to accompany us and gave us the chance to watch the final stage of foliage with spots of new colours from the various maple trees. The timely oriented program gave us the chance to learn everything about the Niagara Falls. Starting with a film in a CIMEX theatre, a view from the famous tower, hike along the falls and a trip on the famous boats “Maid of the Mist” and lots of opportunities for photo shooting.

A picnic visit at an amusing pumpkin farm or a wine tasting at one of the vineyard, that we did not expect in this area, as well as very interesting dinner arrangements were alternating with the guided tours to historic watermills and settlings and a backstage visit to a Shaw theatre as well as the interesting visit to one of the 8 locks of the Welland Canal which since 1932 in its present construction status connects Lake Ontario with Lake Erie which is at a 99,5 m higher level.

The Canadian hosts were also successful in offering an unforgettable Farewell Dinner, as their location was just above a marina at Lake Ontario and offered a sight to lights of Toronto on the far shore.

The moment we unloaded our luggage from the transport bus at the Toronto Airport for the return trip it started to rain again – it was a perfect Indian Summer exchange with lots of new friends gained.
