Incoming exchange from Friendship
Force Lethbridge
Ten ambassadors from the Friendship Force Lethbridge (Canada, Province
Alberta) have been hosted by Friendship Force Varel from May 24th
to 30th 2009.
Coming from Dublin the visitors were met by their hosts at Bremen
Airport.
Before setting off for Germany, the group spent 2 weeks in Ireland,
visiting Friendship Force Causeway in Northern Ireland and touring
the Republic of Ireland for another week thereafter.
Our visitor program showed the Prairie People from Southern
Alberta local and regional attractions, not least specific coastal
respectively maritime museums and facilities.
Starting off with the traditional Varel Day, our guests
were greeted by the Mayor of Varel, and handed over a letter of
greeting to him from the Lethbridge Mayor. A guided tour of the
quaint Varel windmill afterwards completed the first full day in
Varel.
A tour of the Wadden Sea House and the new Container
Terminal (still under construction) in the city of Wilhelmshaven
and the German Emigration Center as well as the
German Shipping Museum in the city of Bremerhaven were
also part of the program.
Contrasting the maritime portion of the program, a guided tour of
Germany`s leading producer of wind machines (ENERCON) in the city
of Aurich and a visit of the Tea Museum (including an east frisian
tea ceremony) in the city of Norden concluded the touristic part
of the visit.
A lovely outdoor farewell party at the home of the president of
Friendship Force Varel topped off the visit before our Canadians
set off into different directions home to Canada and to individually
different destinations in Europe.
