Extensive forest fire in Russia
Friendship Force Recife (Brazil) diverted to Varel (Germany)
On Wednesday evening, August 4th 2010, Horst Neumann, the honorary
President of Friendship Force Varel (Germany), received a phone
call from Günter Lose, Friendship Force Kiel (Germany) with
the news that a portion of an exchange by Brazilian Friendship Force
Ambassadors who were then staying in the area had to be changed.
They had intended to go to Korolev (Russia) via Moscow after having
visited the Friendship Force Schwerin Festival in Germany.
The change was necessary due to the extensive forest fire in that
area in Russia which is threatening the whole region. The ambassadors
were advised not to take this trip. It is just too dangerous. It
is not certain that airplanes will be able to land or take off.
The air is polluted by smoke and it is sticky and unhealthy to breathe.
Günther Lose asked Frienship Force Varel, whether the ambassadors
could be hosted at Varel as an alternative. The very short time
to make a decision with the acting President of Friendship Force
Varel, Helmut Suhren, lead to a positive result. Hans-Hermann Best
and Horst Neumann immediately took action and found host families
for the 16 guests from Friendship Force Recife (Brazil) ambassadors
within 24 hours.
A short visitors programme was developed which was aimed at showing
Varel and its region to the Brazilian visitors instead of Korolev
{Russia). On Saturday afternoon, August 7th 2010, the ambassadors
arrived and participated in their first activities.
Friendship Force demonstrated again what international friendship
means. This event will be remembered by the Brazilian delegation,
as well as by Friendship Force Korolev (Russia) and the Friendship
Force Varel (Germany) for a long time.
